Three years ago I visited India for the first time and I found the beauty and dignity of these spiritual people very moving. I was in Rajasthan and visited Jaipur, the centre for gemstones where exquisite jewellery has been made for ruling Maharajas for centuries. This year I returned to Jaipur , searching for traditional craftsmen and was fortunate to meet a family who have been making jewellery in a beautiful 18th Century Haveli since 1727. This was the time when Maharajah Saiwai Jai Singh, the founder of Jaipur, moved his capital from Amber and invited the family to live next to the Palace from where they have continued to craft exquisite jewels to this day.
The Haveli is a combination of culture and history, romance and poetry, music and myth which can be seen in the exquisite decorative frescoes and carved sandstone grills of the central hall.
