Margaret Macdonald (1864-1928) was born in Wolverhampton and was already an accomplished artist in watercolours, metalwork, embroidery and textiles when she met her future husband, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. They met at Glasgow School of Art which unusually encouraged young women to study there. Together they became the core of The Glasgow Four which had a major influence on the evolution of the style which came to be known as Art Nouveau across the decorative and visual arts.
This delicate range of jewellery in pure Art Nouveau style is inspired by the WILLOWWOOD gesso panels created by Margaret Macdonald for the Room de Luxe in the Willow Tearooms in Glasgow.
The panels may now be seen at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow.
