○ The ANCIENT EGYPT Collection ○The culture and monuments of ancient Egypt left a lasting legacy on the world. From about 3150 BC this sophisticated civilisation, concentrated along the banks of the fertile Nile River in North Africa, developed under the rule of the Pharaohs for over three thousand years. The rule of the pharaohs officially ended in 31 BC when the early Roman Empire conquered Egypt and Marc Antony and Queen Cleopatra were defeated at the Battle of Actium.
The Egyptians were clever and creative. They created their own systems for writing, mathematics, medicine, irrigation and agriculture, as well as the first ships. They were a deeply religious people and invented techniques for building monumental pyramids and temples in which they worshipped their gods with offerings and prayers and where they held elaborate burials. |
